The Commerce Department said on Monday that spending rose 0.5%, increasing for the fourth straight month, reported Reuters. Analysts polled by Reuters had expected consumer spending, which normally accounts for over two-thirds of U.S. economic activity, to increase 0.4% in January. “The message is continuing progress for the economy, if not as fast as hoped,” said Pierre Ellis, a senior economist at Decision Economics in New York.
MSN Money warned this week that the Federal Reserve’s recent increase in the discount rate may mean that higher interest rates are coming. Although the move came sooner than many had expected, it was a step toward more-normal conditions. The Fed stressed that the move doesn’t mean an imminent rise in the more-important federal funds rate. But despite those words, it’s a clear warning from the Fed that near-zero interest rates won’t last forever. This action has led some to speculate that U.S. consumers may begin to feel the pinch of inflation very soon, making precious metals all the more attractive as a hard asset.

Featured Bullion Product:
Each week, APMEX features a different bullion product for the benefit of our readers. This week’s featured product is the Australian Gold Kangaroo from the Perth Mint.
Founded in 1899, the Perth Mint is a world leader in the innovative design and minting of precious metal products. The Perth Mint introduced the Australian Gold Kangaroo/Nugget series of bullion coins in 1987. From its beginning, this issue of coins had two unique features: these coins featured a 'two-tone' frosted design effect, and each coin was sealed in an individual hard plastic case. Issued as Australian legal tender, gold Kangaroos are a favorite with investors worldwide.
At first, the reverse of these coins displayed an Australian gold nugget. Then in 1989, the design was changed to feature a more world-recognized symbol of Australia — the kangaroo. The Australian Kangaroo designs vary every year, making these bullion coins highly sought after as collectibles. Struck from .9999 pure gold, Australian Kangaroos make a great addition to anyone's bullion position.
APMEX offers Australian Gold Kangaroo/Nugget coins in a variety of sizes, including 1 ounce gold coins and fractional gold coins in 1/2, 1/4, 1/10 and 1/20 ounce weights.

This week, the Senate voted for a second four-year term for Ben Bernake, as Chairman of the Federal Reserve. This vote came on the heels of weeks of continued criticism of the Fed Chairman by certain Members of Congress.
“The intense scrutiny of Mr. Bernanke's record underscored risks to the Fed's cherished independence to change interest rates without political interference,” according to the Wall Street Journal. The Federal Reserve insisted this week that the economy is starting to recover, but it is still fragile enough that the Fed decided to leave interest rates at record low levels. As a result, the dollar saw gains, causing the stock markets to rally. This activity in the stock market caused the consolidation in precious metals and other commodity prices. Many investors, not convinced that the recession is over, are taking advantage of this consolidation, buying gold at much lower prices compared to recent highs.
Also this week, APMEX featured an unheard of “Gold at Spot” sale. Perth Mint colorized fractional gold coins were offered at spot through an email to APMEX customers. “People really responded to the rare opportunity to buy gold coins at spot. No other precious metals company is in the position to successfully do this kind of sale. We sold out of a huge supply of fractional gold coins in about 6 hours,” remarked Mike Garofalo, Vice President of APMEX.

Featured Bullion Product:
Each week, APMEX will review a different bullion product for the benefit of our readers. This week, we will examine the American Gold Buffalo coin.

The obverse depicts the iconic Native American Indian Head design, while the reverse features the classic buffalo design with inscriptions of the weight, denomination and gold content.
American Gold Buffalo Coins are the first .9999 fine, 24-karat gold coins ever struck by the United States Mint. They are available to investors seeking to invest in a 24-karat gold coin that has its fineness and purity guaranteed by the United States Government.

These housing struggles were partially confirmed late in the week, as Reuters reported that GMAC Financial Services received $3.8 Billion in additional government aid on top of the $12.5 Billion of taxpayer money it had already received. This infusion of government bailout money refueled concerns about the general health of the lenders and “will boost the federal government’s ownership in GMAC to 56 percent, from 35 percent,” according to the Huffington Post.
With continued housing woes, increasing government bailouts and much concern over the Health Care Reform legislation, many investors are cautious as 2010 approaches. Many continue to look to gold as a respite from encroaching inflation and the lingering uncertainty of economic recovery. Gold ended the year up 25 percent, according to Reuters.com, with the “biggest absolute annual gain in three decades with a small advance on Thursday, rising for an unprecedented ninth year in a row.”
APMEX wants to wish all our customers a safe and prosperous New Year. We look forward to helping you achieve your precious metal investment goals in 2010. Over the New Year’s holiday, we hope that you are able to take advantage of 2010 Gold and Silver American Eagles pre-sale, going on now at www.APMEX.com.

CNN reported today that the U.S. Senate passed a $290 Billion increase to the legal debt limit allowed for the U.S. Treasury. Jeanne Sahadi, Senior Writer for CNNMoney.com stated, “If the Senate hadn't raised the debt ceiling before Dec. 31, the Treasury would likely have had to employ extraordinary measures to keep the debt below the ceiling to stave off default.” Having raised the debt ceiling to $12.394 Trillion, the U.S. has now witnessed the doubling of its national debt since 2000.
To default on that debt would unleash a chain of events that could devalue U.S. bonds and seriously harm the nation's reputation with creditors around the world. In a related article, Sahadi went on to say, “If the ceiling is ever breached, the country would effectively be in default. In the universe of financial things to avoid, it ranks as a ‘no good, very bad’ event.”
If this news wasn’t enough, Americans found a lump of coal in their Christmas stockings with the announcement that taxpayer backed mortgage companies, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, could award their top 10 executives with up to $40 Million in compensation according to CNNMoney.com.
With news like this, it’s no wonder that many Americans are turning to gold and silver to defend their portfolios against the strong probability of rising inflation for the New Year. Precious metals continue to witness significant buying activity fueled by declining optimism for a speedy U.S. economic recovery.
To end the year with some holiday cheer, APMEX launched its Annual I.R.S. – “Inventory Reduction Sale” on December 23rd. Many popular bullion items have undergone significant price reductions. We have clearly marked selected products throughout the website with a special “IRS Stamp” icon, so you can easily locate them. Buy your precious metals today at www.APMEX.com and have a very Happy New Year!

The U.S. Dollar came under more pressure this week as the central bank for the tiny island of Mauritius became the third such bank to buy Gold in the past month. Mauritius bought 2 metric tons, worth $71.7 million dollars, from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This purchase followed in the footsteps of the central banks of India and Sri Lanka. Additionally India’s central bank said it is open to buying more Gold from the IMF. Speculation that even more central banks could buy Gold has helped fuel Gold’s recent surge to almost $1,200.00 per ounce.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday that nearly one in four U.S. borrowers owes more on their mortgage than their home is worth. The newspaper said almost 10.7 million households, or 23% of all mortgage holders, were "under water" in the third quarter. Another 5.3 million homeowners have mortgages that are 20% higher than the value of their homes, as prices have dropped significantly since the start of the recession. This is a bothersome sign that the housing market could be threatened by a new wave of defaults in the near future.
On Friday, Dubai World, the Emirate’s investment vehicle, was looking to suspend repayments on all or part of its $59 Billion debt to various world banks. This news lowered prices in both the precious metals and stock markets the day after the Thanksgiving Holiday, as investors looked to put their cash into safer havens. Historically, the stock market does not slump the day after Thanksgiving. In fact, between 1999 and 2008, the market has seen just two down days on the day after Thanksgiving. This news coupled with continued lower consumer sentiment and a 25-year high in the unemployment rate seemed to discourage talks of economic recovery.
APMEX hopes you had a Happy Thanksgiving and reminds you to keep an eye out for our 2nd Annual “12 Days of Christmas” sales event that begins on Monday, November 30th. You do not want to miss this great opportunity to save money on your favorite bullion and numismatic items this holiday season.

Gold ended the week with a gain of $26.80 at $1,178.80. This week, 2009 1/10 oz. Gold American Eagles, 2009 1 oz. BU Gold American Eagles and 1 oz. .9999+ Fine Pamp Suisse Gold Bars were in great demand as Gold reached new all-time highs during the week!
Silver:
Spot Silver prices opened this week at $18.52. Silver reached a high of $18.93, on Monday, November 23rd. The low for Silver occurred on Friday, November 26th, at $17.90. Silver ended the week down $0.12 at $18.40. This week, 2009 1 oz. Silver American Eagles, 2010 1 oz. Canadian Silver Maple Leafs, Sunshine Mint 1 oz. .999 Fine Silver Rounds and 1 oz. .999 Fine Silver Buffalo Rounds remained very popular with Silver investors.
Platinum:
Spot Platinum prices opened this week at $1,445.60 and ended the week up $1.40, at $1,447.00. 1 oz. Pamp Suisse Platinum Bars, 1 oz. Credit Suisse Platinum Bars, 10 oz. Numismatics:
This Thanksgiving, precious metal investors certainly have a lot to be thankful for in the market. The spot price of Gold has not only surpassed the old record of $1,033.00 per ounce, it has utterly shattered it. On Wednesday, Gold reached yet another all-time high, surpassing the $1,190.00 mark as investors continue to buy the metal in hopes of hedging their portfolios against a weak U.S. Dollar. As we have said in weeks past, there have been a number of conservative analysts predicting that Gold will go up to $1,200.00, while the more aggressive analysts are predicting a $1,500.00 plateau or beyond. APMEX has seen a tremendous influx of traffic on our website due to this flurry of activity in the metals market. Even beyond bullion items, Pre-1933 U.S. Gold has been very much in demand by both the collector and investor.
We are also thankful for the movement in the spot price of Silver. As it was announced earlier this week, the U.S. Mint has sold out of its supply of 2009 Silver American Eagles. However, APMEX has a very limited supply left of those desirable items, and they will likely sell very quickly. APMEX also has a wide variety of numismatic items from which to choose. Cull Silver Dollars and Morgan Silver Dollars that grade Very Good to Very Fine are also selling very well.
Morgan Silver Dollars are one of the most popular coins of all time and for this, we will give thanks to this series by highlighting the first coin in this series: the 1878 8 Tailfeathers variety. The Mint would go on to create a 7/8 Tailfeather variety later, in error, as they were transitioning to the final die state of 7 Tailfeathers. that was used later in production. These error coins occurred when the master die was not engraved properly, allowing for parts of the 8 Tailfeathers to be visible.
Although this is a popular variety, it is relatively common and premiums are usually only applicable if the tips of all of the 8 Tailfeathers can be boldly seen. As a whole, most 8 Tailfeather coins are extremely well struck with above average luster. Though there is no known mintage, estimates are that nearly 750,000 were minted as they were only struck for a limited time, beginning in mid-March of that year. Many of these coins were stored in canvas bags for decades creating the beautiful toning that often commands high premiums. These coins were eventually paid out by the U.S. Treasury well into the 1950’s and early 1960’s. In fact, many of these coins were paid out by Las Vegas casinos because they loved to use Silver Dollars as payment in many of their slot machines.
Have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

The rising cost of oil is also troublesome this week. The U.S. Energy Secretary said that the rising cost of oil could damage the world economy just as it begins to rebound. In addition, he said that a sharp upswing in oil prices could hinder a global economic recovery and pointed out that last year’s oil price spike was a disaster for the world economy.
As bullion continues its upward trend, more and more investors are eagerly buying physical assets such as bullion gold and silver. Since APMEX broke the news about the availability of the Fractional American Gold Eagle coins, they have taken up most of the headlines. Not to be outdone, silver is quietly gaining ground.
Cull Silver Dollars remain strong and coins such as the 1921 Morgan Silver Dollars in circulated collector’s grades and Peace Silver Dollars in Very Good to Extra Fine condition are once again very popular. The common date Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars in higher grades that are graded by a third-party grading service are also selling well. These items continue to make a lasting impression on the investing public.
Morgan Silver Dollars are arguably the most collected coin in the world.
Last week, we shifted gears to accommodate a collector’s point of view and talked about VAM varieties. This week, we will highlight a beautiful coin from the Carson City Mint which produced Morgan Silver dollars from 1878 to 1893. As most coin collectors know, coins from the Carson City Mint generally command quite a premium. 1878 was the first year that Morgan Silver Dollars were minted and that was also the first year that these coins were produced in Carson City, Nevada.
This coin was struck with a "Reverse of 1878" die variety which has a parallel top arrow feather and seven tail feathers. The 1878-CC had the second highest Carson City mintage with 2.2 million coins minted. It is one of the more consistently well struck coins in the entire Morgan series with very pleasing luster. Due to the fact that this is the first year of issue, well struck, and generally pleasing to the eye, this has always been a popular coin with collectors.

The Fall of 2008 marked the beginning of the biggest financial down slide in the U.S. since the Great Depression. Unfortunately, not much has changed in the big picture. This week, hopes of financial healing took another hit as the Labor Department released new unemployment data showing a 26-year high at 9.8 percent. The month of September saw 263,000 jobs added to the casualty list, bringing the total to 15.1 million Americans out of work.
Older Americans are particularly being affected by job market losses according to the Social Security Administration, resulting in a 23 percent increase in retirement benefits applications.
This news leaves many asking what goals the stimulus package has achieved, as it has not yielded positive effects on consumer spending, one of the primary factors in shoring up any economy. Meanwhile, the threat of massive inflation weighs heavy on investors’ minds.
Most self-directed investors have quietly been amassing silver and gold over the past year to protect their assets. Many gold and silver investors have been predicting these events for some time and have been stockpiling precious metals throughout the year.
Investors across the nation took full advantage of APMEX’s One Million Ounces of Surplus Silver Sale during the last week of September. At the end of the month, APMEX had just over one hundred thousand ounces remaining from the sale, proving that the flight to precious metals is not over – it is just beginning as people continue to realize the true value of preserving wealth with hard assets.

Numismatics:
Unquestionably, the most collected coin in the world is the Morgan Silver Dollar. This coin was named after its designer, George T. Morgan, and minting began in 1878. The series culminated in 1921 after a 16-year absence, between the years of 1905 and 1920. Beginning this week, APMEX will highlight a particular date and mintmark of silver dollar and share this information with you. These reports may unlock some of the reasons why this particular series of coins has become so popular. Is it the beautiful design? Is it because each coin contains .77344 ounces of pure silver? Whatever the reason, these coins are the most popular in the world. This week we will look at the 1889-CC.
It is not lost on any coin collector or investor that coins from the Carson City (Nevada) Mint command a premium. The 1889-CC is no exception. With a total mintage of only 350,000 business strikes, this is one of the rarest coins in the series. Frankly, this is a difficult coin in virtually every grade from Almost Good to Mint State-64. It is virtually impossible to find in any grades higher than that. These coins often exhibit a less than average strike, but they are often found with a satin-like to frosty luster. Many higher-grade examples display semi-proof like fields that are designated in the industry as ‘DMPL,’ which stands for Deep Mirror Proof Like. However, as one would rightfully assume, many of these coins have been well circulated, as these coins were spent throughout the remainder of the 19th century and into the 20th century. Consequently, there are a large number of circulated examples. Though 10 obverse dies and 7 reverse dies were used to strike these coins, there are no major die varieties within the date. As more collectors and investors learn about Morgan Silver Dollars every year, these coins may likely increase in value!

Though it is a fixture on all American coins and currency now, IN GOD WE TRUST did not appear on American coinage until 1864 when it graced the Two-Cent Piece. This was due in large part to the strong religious beliefs of the time during the Civil War. Secretary of the Treasury Mint Salmon P. Chase took it upon himself to affix some type of motto with the word “GOD” onto all coins. He was successful in doing so in 1865 when Congress, and the Mint Director allowed the motto to be placed on all silver and gold coins. Between the years of 1864 and 1909 it appeared on some coins while it did not appear on others. A few coins that it did appear on were the Shield Nickel , the $20, $10 and $5 Liberty Gold Coins, the Morgan Silver Dollar, the Barber Half Dollar, and the Barber Quarter Dollar. It appeared on the new Lincoln Cent in 1909 and has remained there ever since. In 1916 it became a permanent fixture on the dime and the quarter. The Jefferson Nickel, first minted in 1938, also bore that inscription. In 1956 IN GOD WE TRUST was declared the national motto of the United States. The motto first appeared on paper currency in 1957 with the one dollar silver certificate. Though it has met with some controversy, most Americans approve of the motto on United States money.
APMEX has now obtained the 2009 Denver Mint Professional Years Lincoln Cent. They are available as a single coin, as a roll, or as a 50 roll box ($25 Face Value). Next week, on August 26th, the Mint will release the 4 newly-designed 2009 Lincoln Cents in their original copper composition, just as they were released in 1909. These coins will be packaged as a four coin proof set. Their original composition was 95% copper, 3% zinc, and 2% tin alloy. Thomas Jurkowsky, Director of the U.S. Mint’s Office of Public Affairs, has stated that the sets are unlimited. The Mint has not yet disclosed a price.

Where have all the dimes gone? As time takes its toll on us, it also takes its toll on the hobby of coin collecting. Over the last 30 years, silver has experienced a somewhat uneven marketplace with high peaks and low valleys. Silver reached its peak during 1979 and 1980 due to an anomaly that will likely never be repeated. It’s most recent peak was in March of 2008, when it was over $20.00 an ounce. These peaks and valleys have significantly reduced the numbers of dimes considered to be thought of as common coins in collector grades. These coins are now becoming scarce due to their bullion content. Mercury Dimes, always a hit with collectors, are especially in short-supply as these lower grade examples are traded strictly as bullion now. However, even though this is now becoming a tougher series to collect in circulated grades, the key dates such as the 1916-D are still most commonly found on the bourse floor in Almost Good-3 to Very Good-10 grades.
Although the future price of silver is unknown, one thing that is known is that nearly all Type coin prices are strong. Problem free examples, of course, have enjoyed the most success though ones with minor defects that are reasonably priced are also being purchased. Two Cent Pieces, especially in circulated grades, have had a tremendous run with its key dates the 1864 Small Motto, and the 1872, when found, still commanding high premiums.
Classic Commemoratives are continuing to pick up steam too as nearly all are commanding strong prices. This set, even in high grade, is very affordable and attainable. Classic Commemorative Memorabilia, though always bringing strong prices, have only become scarcer as these articles have either deteriorated due to lack of proper preservation or they have been lost to time.

By now it must sound like a broken record, the coin market is demonstrating great strength. Last week’s Florida United Numismatists (FUN) show held in West Palm Beach, Florida was very successful and attendance was strong. Pre-1933 Gold type coins in lower mint state grades remain the topic of conversations both on the bourse floor as well as in local coin shops around the United States. Even the tiny $1 Gold coins have enjoyed the benefits of the coin market’s favorable position.
Problem free Half Cents and Large Cents in collector grades, that are reasonably priced, continue to remain the backbone of early type coins. Though the more common dates in the 1840’s and 1850’s have seen a rise in popularity, it is the early examples of these series’ that are the driving force. In addition to the success early copper has had, Bust and Seated Liberty type coinage have also seen a resurgence in popularity, especially the Seated Liberty Quarter series.
Morgan Dollars, much like early type, have remained strong in affordable grades. Common date Morgans in high grade continue their upward swing with no indication of slowing down. Even key date Morgans such as the 1889-CC (Carson City) and the 1894 dollar have benefited from the current demand!

Many have already been found in circulation! Early Lincoln Cents continue their upward trend while Flying Eagle Cents seem to be jumping into the action as well. Early Mercury Dimes with Full Split Bands and Walking Liberty Half Dollars are also continuing to hold strong. Select Classic Commemorative Half Dollars continue to perform well in higher grades.

Stocks were up around 23% overall from their March lows. Some think that moves in the markets this week could be confirmation that an economic recovery may be starting to form. However, many experts believe that our economy is still in the early stages of the bottoming process and that noticeable recovery will not be apparent until at least the 4th quarter of this year. As a result of these cautious forecasts, precious metals remain very popular among savvy investors and those looking to firm up their financial futures.

The list of 2009 successful coin shows continues to grow and grow. From the FUN show during the 1st week of January to the recently completed show in Santa Clara, all of the major coin shows have been well-attended, and the activity level has been brisk! This continues to bode well for collectors, investors and dealers alike!
The very recent price decline in the spot price of gold has had the effect of lowering the premiums a bit on Pre-1933 US Gold Coins. With these lowered premiums has come increased demand for these coins. Additionally, Proof and Mint set activity is very strong with demand, not only for the older silver sets, but for more recent issues as well.
And while we never like to say “I Told You So,” it is with much pleasure that we note that the U. S. Classic Commemorative Coin Series has advancing issue bids beating declining issues by a 4 to 1 ratio! We have been saying for the last 4 months that these issues were undervalued and now the market has started to realize that as well!

The city of Baltimore offers a beautiful and renovated Inner Harbor area, the venerable Orioles baseball team, and probably the best crab cakes on earth. The city was very crowded last week with coin dealers from across the nation; but they weren’t there to enjoy the sights. They were there to conduct business at the Whitman Coin and Currency Expo. APMEX returned from the Baltimore coin show with renewed confidence in the rare coin market and significant new inventory! If you were to ask the majority of dealers in attendance there, they would all say that the show was a rousing success! Although the convention was shortened by one day from previous sessions (there was no Sunday activity), the dealers conducted enough business to make the trip to Maryland worthwhile.
We bought and bought and bought! Nathan, Robyn and Mike kept the US Post Office booth very busy mailing package after package of coins back to Oklahoma. The highly sought after 2009 Ultra High Relief Gold Coins were on everyone’s shopping list and there were only a few available at the entire show! These beautiful coins are very hard to get and no gold collection is complete without one! Beyond modern rarities, the reliable Morgan Silver Dollar was another very popular item at the show – in conditions from culls to Gems! We bought thousands of them!
Proof sets, Barber coins, early Lincoln cents, Large Size US Currency and all denominations of pre-1933 US Gold coins rounded out much of our new purchases. Click the hyperlinks to see some of the new items we purchased for you! And continue to look at these links over the next few days as we list more and more of these wonderful new items for your collections!

In fact, at APMEX, the numbers of orders increased 262% for Gold from 2007 to 2008. Silver orders increased 358% from 2007 to 2008. So far, 2009 appears to be making those increases look paltry by comparison.
These two facts alone should convince you – in case you need convincing – that gold and silver are the only investments to make right now to help prevent your wealth from being swallowed whole by the monstrous deficit growing in America today. Sharp falls in global markets have also contributed to the easing of the bullish trend on bullion prices that we have seen lately. Silver, Platinum and Palladium followed suit with Gold this week and have backed off their recent higher prices. Heavy losses in the equity markets worldwide have only deepened concerns about the economy and made precious metals more attractive to savvy investors and collectors. These factors are not significantly slowing the current gold rush though.
Here is a brief synopsis of the highs and lows in the market and an overview of our very popular bullion products and numismatics here at www.APMEX.com.
Gold:
Spot Gold prices opened this week at $940.30. The high during the week was on Monday March 2nd at $959.50, while the low for the week occurred on Wednesday March 4th at $900.40. The Dow Jones Industrial Average broke through the 7,000 point support level and continued to drop further this week, closing Friday at 6,626.94. This weakness in the financial markets has added to the demand for gold numismatic and bullion coins. Although we have said this repeatedly, there is significant demand for Pre-1933 US Gold Coins, as well as World Gold Coins. This seems to help keep the spot price of gold above the $900.00 per ounce mark. At coin shows, over the Internet, on the dealers trading networks, everyone is apparently chasing the yellow metal, in all forms!
Prices for many esoteric areas of numismatics – obsolete currency, colonial currency, tokens, and medals – are stable to strong. At recent coin shows and numismatic auctions strong prices are being paid for high-quality or scarce items. Whether it is a condition rarity on a more generic item or simply an item that is truly scarce, the collector demand is there!
